Find out why your internet feels slow

A single speed reading is a starting point. Compare the same device and conditions to narrow down the cause.

Decide what feels slow

A large download, a delayed first page, and a call that freezes need different evidence. Throughput describes how much data moves per second. Response time describes a round trip to a destination. Jitter describes variation in that response. A high download number can sit beside disruptive delays, so begin with the task that is failing.

Record a baseline

On the affected device, open the internet speed test. Note Wi-Fi or Ethernet, approximate location relative to the router, VPN use and other active downloads. Pause optional background transfers if appropriate. Do not run two speed tests together: they compete for the same capacity.

The quick and longer tests have different data allowances, shown before you start. Use the longer option only if your connection allowance permits it. Results describe the path to the test service at that time; another provider, server or application can produce different numbers.

Make one controlled comparison

Which comparison helps with which question?
CompareWhat it can suggest
Same device near the router versus usual roomA repeatable improvement nearby points towards coverage or interference, without proving which radio setting is responsible.
Same device on Ethernet versus Wi-FiA better wired result points towards the wireless part of the path. Cable, port and adapter capabilities can also limit a wired test.
Same setup at a quiet and busy timeA repeatable time pattern helps your provider investigate shared demand or local background use.
Same connection, another capable deviceA difference may involve device performance, radio support, software or the adapter. It does not automatically justify replacing the router.

Check dropouts separately

Run the stability monitor while the problem usually occurs. Keep the tab visible and the device awake. Its small HTTP requests can show delayed or missed checks on that route. A browser pause, busy device or test-service restriction can also cause a missed check; this is not a direct packet-loss measurement.

Interpret a result without overclaiming

Example: A laptop records much lower throughput in an upstairs room than beside the router, while wired performance is consistently good. That is useful evidence to investigate Wi-Fi coverage before buying a faster broadband plan. It does not prove that any one mesh system will fix the house.

For a fixed workstation, Ethernet can be a straightforward option. For rooms where cabling is impractical, placement or a suitable mesh system may help. Our Orbi review compares real-home experiences and explains the limits of an upgrade. Avoid buying equipment from a single test alone.

Give your provider evidence

Send times, connection type, repeated comparisons and the affected task, alongside reviewed support details. Say when a reading is partial and leave missing values unavailable. If only one website is slow or unreachable, use the website troubleshooting guide before assuming the broadband line is the cause.
